Why not spend a pleasant day in the historic City of York where we hope to have a break of over 7 hours?

There are few cities in the North of England, or indeed the whole of Britain, that have the magical beauty of York. Enjoy outstanding architecture and a history that spans from early Roman times, combined with bustling shopping streets. Almost completely medieval, York has many ancient timbered houses and narrow winding streets that give the whole City an atmosphere of history.

York is home to the National Railway Museum where you will be able to admire the recently streamlined Duchess of Hamilton and world famous Mallard, amongst over 100 other magnificent locomotives including a replica of Stephensons Rocket and the Japanese Bullet Train. Entry to the National Railway Museum is free of charge.

The pride of York is the huge and magnificent York Minster which towers over the whole City, visitors return time and time again to this hauntingly beautiful building. Built on a site of an earlier church and Roman fortress, York Minster has towered above the City for over 800 years, being the largest Gothic Cathedral in the Northern Europe it offers an amazing variety of architecture. There are plenty of other excellent places to visit in York including the Jorvik Viking Centre, a walk around the City Walls or shopping in the Shambles. You may wish to catch an Open Top Sightseeing Bus from outside the Station, an excellent way to explore. York also has many fine restaurants, but whether your preference is to eat in or take away, you can't beat traditional Yorkshire Fish & Chips.

Alternatively, Darlington has plenty to keep you entertained. You could spend some time taking the award-winning 'Art in the Yards' mini trail (it even has a map to locate each artwork), which will guide you around all eleven pieces of art and explain a little bit about them. Why not explore the compact town centre on a series of self-guided heritage trails? The 'discover a different Darlington' guide takes you on a voyage of discovery and uncovers delightful sights, quirky facts, fascinating tales and parts of the town you would perhaps never know existed.

You may prefer to visit Durham, a captivating City with winding cobbled streets and a prominent peninsula dominated by the dramatic Cathedral and the Castle which is a World Heritage Site. The quintessential old English University City, Durham has a wonderful timeless quality with rowing on the Wear and relaxing riverside walks together with superb cafes, artisan workshops, boutiques, galleries and museums.

In its thousand years of history, Newcastle (correctly known as Newcastle-upon-Tyne) has grown from a defensive fort on Hadrian's wall, to one of the most influential cities in industry. Today, Newcastle has become a world leader in culture and leisure, including walks along the river, excellent shops, markets, bars, restaurants and its very own Chinatown district.
